Few places pack this much history into this little land. Alcatraz served as a military fort and prison before becoming a federal penitentiary in 1934, holding some of the most notorious inmates in American history – Al Capone and Robert “the Birdman of Alcatraz” Stroud among them – until it closed in 1963, considered too expensive to keep running. In 1969, a coalition of Native American activists occupied the island for 19 months, a pivotal moment in the Native rights movement that’s easy to miss on a quick tour. Today it’s run by the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and it’s one of the most-visited sites in the entire national park system – accessible only by ferry, which makes a good map worth having before you’re standing in line at Pier 33 wondering where to go first.
